MAMAC EXHIBITION:She-Bam Pow Pop Wizz! LES AMAZONES DU POP
On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nice, the exhibition She-Bam Pow Pop Wizz! The Amazons of Pop returns to a strong axis in the history of the MAMAC in Nice: face to face between France and the United States and the borrowing movements between New Realism and Pop.
Behind the scenes the French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle, emblematic figure of the museum’s collection, it is a whole generation (European and North American) of Amazons of art that is in the spotlight.
For the first time in France, in Europe at this scale, the open history for a generation of women who have opened the path of an alternative universe between 1961 – 1973 and contributed to the history of Pop.
This new historical and cultural perspective is written in the context of contemporary issues allows to affirm the exploration missions of MAMAC and thus to establish its contribution to an update of the moment of Pop Art, accessible to all.
In 2020, MAMAC celebrates its 30th anniversary! It’s already been 30 and already that the museum surprises amazes, federates, questions Norte world by the eyes of artists, shakes up – sometimes – our certainties, and invites – every day – young and old, Niçois and international public, to discover the adventure of art from 1960 to the present day. To celebrate this event, the museum prepares throughout the year large-scale exhibitions that echo its collections and identity while firmly enshrining it in the 21st century and an international landscape.
“The exhibition revisits a major axis of THE MAMAC collections: the articulation between the new French realism and American Pop, with the presence, in its collection, of works by Arman, Yves Klein, César, Christo, Robert Rauschenberg, Martial Raysse, Andy Warhol, Tom Wesselmann and many others.”
For the first time in France and the first time in Europe, on this scale – offers a unique re-reading of a landmark artistic movement of the 20th century – POP art – through the works of those who participated in its invention.
A THREE-STEP JOURNEY.
It is a dreamlike explosion that causes us to open the window of the mirror… to a little-known history of Pop Art. Towards a sensual odyssey that narrates a narrative of the emancipation of women by the affirmation of their desire.
They are floating bodies amid Edenic landscapes, erotic drawings inspired by comics or mythology, powerful heroines fighting with sex appeal mark this first episode. These are all signs and expressions of a world about to change.
In the traditional iconography of Pop Art, women are omnipresent: Hollywood stars with glamorous physique, pine-ups with lascivious poses, starlets of variety… The same image of women available area representations of cinema, advertising and paintings of the masters of Pop Art (Andy Warhol, Roy Lichenstein, Tom Wesselmann …).
For the other artists (the Amazons), it is necessary to assert one’s destiny and to free oneself from a particular conception of the passive woman.
